Government Accountability Project, Transparency International and the Whistleblowing International Network are gravely concerned about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/14\/un-united-nations-ostracised-sacked-arrested-whistleblowers\">continuing trend<\/a>\u00a0of UN whistleblowers reporting being singled out for retaliation and facing due process violations. The lack of access to credible independent review undermines trust and confidence in the UN justice system, with the chilling effect of dissuading UN staff from reporting wrongdoing and malpractice.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Last year, along with 40 additional experts and NGOs, we<a href=\"https:\/\/whistleblowingnetwork.org\/News-Events\/News\/News-Archive\/Civil-Society-Statement-on-the-firing-of-UN-human\">\u00a0condemned<\/a>\u00a0the action of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights against whistleblower Ms. Emma Reilly. A UN dispute tribunal judge, who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whistleblower.org\/uncategorized\/what-the-united-nations-and-president-trump-have-in-common-when-it-comes-to-whistleblowers\/\">removed<\/a>\u00a0from hearing her case shortly before releasing his judgment, has now described the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/asia\/australian-judge-accuses-un-of-coup-d-etat-after-dismissal-from-case-involving-chinese-dissidents-20220318-p5a5zd.html\">coup d\u2019etat<\/a>\u201d as \u201c&#8230;worryingly unsurprising in an institution which continues refusal to credibly reform its system or address serious concerns of perceptions of impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2015, the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ga\/search\/view_doc.asp?symbol=A%2F70%2F361&amp;Submit=Search&amp;Lang=E\">recognised<\/a>\u00a0that existing UN whistleblower protection mechanisms lack real independence and effectiveness. Since then, civil society has repeatedly urged the UN to improve whistleblowing protection at its agencies, funds and programmes, putting forward a number of policy and structural reform\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgehub.transparency.org\/helpdesk\/whistleblower-protection-at-the-united-nations\">recommendations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Government Accountability Project, Transparency International and the Whistleblowing International Network will continue to serve as resources on how to address ongoing procedural issues and implement best practices.
