Kontominas <\/span>in Greece applies for a mysterious businessman<\/span>, around who there are many unanswered questions.\u00a0Some media describe <\/span>him a<\/span>s a businessman<\/span> that the church would not declare as a saint because of his activities.\u00a0<\/span>The Greek billionaire <\/span>is not unknown to the Macedonian public.\u00a0<\/span>He is the father of the Greek insurance company “Interameri<\/span>can”<\/span>, and in Macedonia <\/span>he is famous as the owner of the company “Kosmotelko” which <\/span>took part of the shares in the “Macedonian Telecom” and received national license for WiMax, broadband.\u00a0According to the company profile published in “Kathimerini”, “Kosmotelko” had a 7.4 percent share<\/span>s in the “Stonebridge Communications AD”, a company controlled 51 percent of the “Macedonian Telecommunications”.\u00a0Kontominas had<\/span> a land<\/span>, about 22,000 square meters<\/span> near the hotel “Aleksandar Palace”, where he had plans to build a large shopping and business center, <\/span>but this was an idea <\/span>that failed because the land through restitution was returned to owners.\u00a0<\/span>The Greek businessman remained<\/span> in tenuous situation for several years<\/span>, because he was waiting the refund of the money that <\/span>he paid for the land.\u00a0As <\/span>many media were writing back in 2006, Kontominas <\/span>was planning <\/span>\u00a0to open<\/span> a bank and insurance company in Macedonia.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The other reasons why Kontominas is associated with Macedonia are <\/span>the projects in the telecommunications and media secto<\/span>r, which he did not finished.\u00a0<\/span>This was the reason why the Greek journalists were intrigued by his interest to participate in a project in the energy field, an area in which Kontominas <\/span>has no experience<\/span>, as well as a construction and project plan<\/span> for “Skopje 2014”, <\/span>which the Greek government has sharply criticized as part ofirredentist policy of Macedonia.\u00a0After the announcement of the tender<\/span> for hydroelectric plants, some of the Greek media <\/span>had a dilemma whether this investment has a similar political background of<\/span> a Greek investment boom in Macedoni<\/span>, like it was few years<\/span> ago.<\/span> The\u00a0Portal “Protagon.gr”<\/span>, citing sources from the Greek Foreign Ministry<\/span>, announced that<\/span> the former Prime Minister George Papandreou <\/span>received a bid through which <\/span>it was suggest<\/span>ed that <\/span>the Greek investments in Macedonia will <\/span>affect for a faster resolution of <\/span>the name dispute because those\u00a0that <\/span>are making the decision on these investments require financial support.\u00a0<\/span>According to the portal, several people involved in <\/span>the Greek investments in Macedonia managed to persuade former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis that such investment<\/span> and activities will help to change the position on the Macedonian name dispute.\u00a0“Not that at some point <\/span>we came to a<\/span> point for a compromise on the name, but the cooperation of the ‘Deutsche Telekom’ with a Greek businessman was part of the investigation in Bonn<\/span> for unconventional payments to politicians in Skopje, which ended without anything to prove,” wrote Protagon.gr.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Relationship <\/span>between Kontominas <\/span>and the Greek political parties <\/span>is a great enigma too.\u00a0In some media texts notes <\/span>it is sad that in the recent years he has collaborated with New Democracy, although originally <\/span>he had strong ties with the socialist PA<\/span>SOK.\u00a0However, <\/span>his association with New Democracy falls into water<\/span>, because his television “Alpha” deals extensively with the scandal with church land “Vatopedi” which was one of the stronger shocks that shake the government of Costas Karamanlis.\u00a0<\/span>He had a rule that <\/span>he does not want to interfere with any particular political option,<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>he is beyond<\/span> the political parties and keep<\/span>s \u00a0his own business interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently he is again highlighted in Greece for the redemption of the \u00a0television “Alpha”.Although <\/span>the television <\/span>was for many years in his hands, <\/span>in 2008 <\/span>the German “RTL” b<\/span>ought 70 percent stake in <\/span>this TV.\u00a0His name is connected again with “Deutsche Telekom” during the negotiations <\/span>\u00a0with “RTL” <\/span>adding comments that<\/span> the German television had very close ties with the German telecommunications giant.\u00a0Apparently due to large losses, “RTL” again recently sold 70 percent stake <\/span>to Kontominas and he is again<\/span> a full owner of the television.\u00a0Apart from “Alpha” Kontominas has <\/span>the TV “Channel 9” and several radio stations<\/span> in his own hands.<\/p>\n
