Whistleblowers have been recognized in North Macedonian legislation since 2015. Although whistleblowers had de facto existed in the years prior and had exposed several high-level corruption cases, in the absence of a legal framework they often suffered consequences for their actions. Transparency International Macedonia was the first organization to initiate the adoption of a law on whistleblower protection.
Although Macedonian legislation recognizes whistleblowers and provides for their protection, its implementation appears to remain at a less than satisfactory level. In the latest regional report, you can review the implementation and legislative framework for whistleblower protection across the Western Balkans.
The report provides an overview of the legal framework in each national jurisdiction, an analysis of implementation and practice, key challenges and gaps, and recommendations for improving the current situation.
